Granted Roots - Cooking for a Village
Rain, rain, go away, come back again, another day. Mother nature has decided to give us some rain these next few days. Being warm and cozy indoors, I was compelled to write and let my mind flow of all these thoughts that have been flooding inside me.  My parents just recently came back from the Philippines, handling business and enjoying some well deserved vacation time. It’s saddens me...

Philippines Trip - Day 9 - Walk of the Past to the...
Day 9 Thank goodness the rain has stopped and the sun decided to share itself with us today. Few of us were set to take a nice walk down memory lane, trekking through a rough trail and the end reward is the ocean waters.   It seem to be nothing to them as we crossed flooded and muddy terrain. It was an inspiring trail though. Along the trail, pops shared some of his stories of his past, of...

Philippines Trip - Day for Pops - Maligayang Bati!...
Day 8 Pop’s birthday celebration started with a midnight toast, lots of laughs, stories, singing - HOLLA @tcha Magic MIC along with lots of ginebra, wine and other goodness. The food prep has begun ever since we arrived. Day before they had already prepped to roast a fine pig (from my grandpa’s pigery) before the midnight toast. For the day of his birthday…2 whole roast...

Philippines Trip - Day 5 - Freeeedom! - Jose Rizal...
day 5 Back to the basics of the Philippines and how it got their Independence. I’ve got a lot to learn but I must say, experiencing the walks of a man that helped the Philippines FIGHT for their FREEDOM was very inspiring. A known tourist spot and history landmark, during the times when the Spaniards owned the land - Intramuros. I was also able to experience the foot steps to a...

Philippines Trip - Day 4 - Bye Lobo - Hello...
Day 4 another beautiful morning but a sad one cuz my family and I are leaving Lobo to head to Manila. All my uncles, aunts, and cousins all gather and meet at my grandpa’s house as we finish loading up the jeepney. We all have our last laughs and reminisce the last few days of our stay. Talks about when we will all see each other again, and wish that hopefully it could be a sooner than...

Philippines Trip - Day 3 - Paying Respects and...
Day 3 Every morning here I would wake up around 5-6ish am, and the first thing I would do is shake off my sleep and go outside. Marinate on Uncles porch as I recollect my thoughts and just breathe :) *hee-hee-hooo! jk), i embrace life here and accept the things as they are.   It’s all beautiful and amazing, and at the same time, but it’s very very hard living here. But even though...

Philippines Trip Day 2
Day 2 beach day! Almalin beach resort. Time for some relaxation and what we do best, cooked food ALL day.  Rented a kayak for 500 pesos (about $10) for the whole day – something I never got to do, especially in another country at that. Thoughts of “when animals attack” big sharks, whales, or some random seal come out n eat me or something – ha!  Aside from that, it was totally nothing like...

Philippines Trip Day 1
Day 1 – lobo, batangas oh what a day of flight and travel. Let me break down the numbers – approx. 16hrs of flying total – 1 stop over in hawaii – then the remaining 10hrs to Manila. Then a 3 hour drive into the Provence, mind you, the streets are not all that perfect. I’m grateful that we arrived safely.  One of our first stops before we hit Lobo, was a famous restaurant known for their...

Rice Cooker Dreams
Purchasing a rice cooker is a story in itself… So here I am, admitting that I’ve never purchased a rice cooker before until yesterday. Of all the years that rice has been a part of my life, and as long as I can recall cooking, I’ve never had to purchase one. It has always been available, I guess. Just to fill in some gaps, I cater an event called GoodTimes in Oakland, CA, which...
